It’s called a “Day on the Track” and we’re not talking about hanging on the homestretch rail and praying for your long-shot trifecta bet to come in.
Instead, the City of Marysville is inviting you – ladies and gentlemen and children of all ages – to the Marysville BMX Track, 618 N. Main, to take a lap or two around the gem of a track on a 24-in bike.
If you think this event is for children, you would be half-right. The City of Marysville, Chad Clarridge (who runs the track) and the rest of the world wants your fat, 45-year-old carcass on a bike to take a turn or two on the loop that those snotty-nosed 7th graders make look so easy.
The Open House – for all ages – will be from 1 to 4 p.m. where anyone – regardless of age, sex or overall physical conditioning – can beg or borrow a BMX bike and give it a spin around the track.
A USA BMX license will be required to participate, but one can get a free one-day trial membership/license by signing up at usabmx.com/trial.
There will be a limited number of loaner bikes and helmets available. Helmets, long-sleeved shirts and pants are required kit for anyone making the loop, no exceptions. Gloves are also recommended and any pegs or kickstands will need to be removed from bikes before they hit the track.
Should you think yourself as a middle-aged Wiz Kid on two wheels, you then get a chance to prove it as the real racing begins at 4 p.m. Saturday where BMX riders from all over the place – the last time we visited on a regular race night there were entrants from Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania, as well as all points in Ohio – will be competing.
And, yes, they have races featuring adults, with competitive Age Groups reaching into those in their 50s. And these guys mean business.
Should you be showing off for the kids and pull a hammy, free hot dogs and ice cream will be available to help you get past it, plus food trucks often make an appearance at the BMX Track to help alleviate the pain of you getting smoked by an 11-year-old.
Registration for the scheduled races Saturday begins at 2:30 p.m. with the races starting promptly at 4 p.m. once the amateurs clear the track.
