The exercise will be conducted at all naval installations across the US.

The US Navy has commenced Citadel Shield-Solid Curtain 2022, an annual two-week force protection and anti-terrorism exercise.

Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) and the Commander, US Fleet Forces Command (USFFC) are taking part in the exercise.

The two-part exercise began on 31 January and will continue until 11 February. It will be conducted at all naval installations in the continental US, including Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL).

NSGL commanding officer captain Jason Williamson said: “Our sailors will be perfecting their tactics, training and procedures, and honing their skills to ensure they remain the premier fighting force, ready and able to defend our nation every day.”

CNIC-led Citadel Shield is a field training exercise and Solid Curtain is a command post exercise that is co-led by CNIC and USFFC.

The regularly scheduled exercise aims to enhance interoperability between navy commands, other services, and agency partners.

It also uses realistic scenarios to train the navy’s first responders to help maintain their readiness levels to growing threats.

Installation training officer Terry Lanners said: “This exercise will provide participants with an opportunity to assess capabilities, plans, policies, and procedures. It will focus on decision-making, coordination, and integration with other jurisdictions/organisations during a variety of scenarios.

“The expected outcome of the exercise is successful integration of, and communication of first responders throughout the community and the navy.”

In 2020, the US Navy conducted Exercise Citadel Shield-Solid Curtain from 3-14 February.
